The record — long form

Condit survives in the record as a platted townsite adjoining Nebraska City on the north — one of the rival additions staked out in the speculative rush that followed the 1854 Kansas–Nebraska Act, when the territorial legislature granted charters to seventeen would-be towns and promoters platted neighbors onto every promising riverbank. The 1937 Nebraska History inventory of the state's ghost towns preserves its location; the plat is the substance of the record.

Nebraska City itself began the same year the territory opened, on the site of the army's abandoned first Fort Kearny, and swallowed its neighbors as it consolidated — the surrounding paper towns were absorbed into the city's 1858 union or faded beside it. Condit's fate was the second kind: a recorded locality that never built into a substantial town. The file's research note states the honest limits — the source gives a historic locality, not a modern parcel, and platted status does not establish that much was ever constructed.

Documented history

  • Former platted settlement adjoining northern Nebraska City. The site's documented history is the record the rest of the file stands on. It's verified history: the dossier's load-bearing detail. 'Nebraska Ghost Towns, Nebraska History 18 (1937), 181–191' documents the entry. The detail belongs to the verified spine of the entry.
