Is Dentzel Carousel haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

The Dentzel Carousel is the merry-go-round that stayed — the 1896 Gustav Dentzel carousel built for the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, sold to Meridian in 1909, still in its original carousel house at the end of the streetcar line. It's one of 11 carousels designated National Historic Landmarks, the only one in the South.

The carousel was the cabinetmaker's art — the German immigrant's Philadelphia workshop, the hand-carved basswood animals with their original paint under six to ten coats, the oil paintings on the panels that are the carousel's scenery. The restoration took 11 years and stripped the layers back to Dentzel's colors.

The carousel is still there — the Highland Park pavilion, the lion and the tiger and the 20 horses, the $1 million valuation on a $2,000 purchase. The file keeps the carousel: the 1896 Dentzel, the 1909 move, and the merry-go-round that's the South's landmark.

The Dentzel Carousel is the archive's carousel file — the World's Fair survivor, the original paint, and the merry-go-round that's still turning.

Why this file matters

The Dentzel Carousel is the archive's carousel file — the 1896 menagerie, the only Southern NHL carousel, and the original paint that survived.

A carousel that kept its paint keeps its animals — the file's suggestion being that the Dentzel's hold is the restoration: the basswood under the coats, the oil paintings, and the carousel that's still the World's Fair's.
