The record — long form

The auditorium opened in 1912 inside South Dakota State's Administration Building — the hall now called Morrill Hall — and spent a century as the school's stage, hosting an estimated four hundred State University Theatre and Prairie Repertory Theatre productions. It was renamed in 1978 for David B. Doner, after forty-five years of service to the university. When the new Performing Arts Center opened in 2019, Doner went dark for productions; the university then mounted a preservation project for the four decades of graffiti students had inscribed on its backstage walls, pipes, and ceilings.

George

The resident legend has a name. Theatre students tell of a janitor who fell to his death in 1919 from the alcove above the stage where the organ sat; for the next two years, the story goes, the organ played with nobody at the keyboard until it was dismantled and carried off to the music department. The ghost stayed, filed under George — 'a known entity,' as one professor put it, longer than anyone on the faculty could remember.

No record of the 1919 fall has surfaced, which is the standard posture for backstage lore. The faculty's own framing is the archive's too: any theatre old enough, the saying goes, has a ghost, and an old building's drafts, creaks, and late-night rehearsals keep the supply steady.

The record of claims

Local folkloreHaunting

A former janitor is said to cause mischievous disturbances. Theatres collect ghosts the way they collect curtain calls, and Doner Auditorium in Brookings, South Dakota has taken its bows. Local lore carries the account; no documentation has ever caught up with it. 'The Haunted Indoors of Eastern South Dakota' carries the account. The haunting is unproven and unfired: it keeps showing up for work anyway.

Local folklore

A former janitor is said to cause mischievous disturbances. Theatres collect ghosts the way they collect curtain calls, and Doner Auditorium in Brookings, South Dakota has taken its bows. It survives as local folklore, which is to say it survives because people keep telling it. The retelling is the record now — the legend metabolized the facts long ago.
