The record — long form
Filoli is what a gold mine builds — the 1917 Georgian Revival estate William Bowers Bourn II put up in the Woodside foothills with Empire Mine money, on watershed land he controlled as president of the water company. The name is his own acronym: FIght for a just cause, LOve your fellow man, LIve a good life. Willis Polk designed the 54,000-square-foot house as 'a place to grow young' for a couple in their late fifties; it went over budget to $425,000 and kept going.
The estate was engineered for self-sufficiency — sixteen acres of English Renaissance gardens, a Gentleman's Orchard, the house overlooking the reservoir Bourn's company managed, 654 acres on Ohlone land along the coastal range. The Bourns entertained on the grand scale; when they died in 1936, the Roths — Matson Navigation money — took it over and made the gardens better, Lurline Roth working with the Bourns' own designer for decades.
Lurline Roth's exit made it public — 'Filoli is too beautiful to be private,' she said, donating it to the National Trust in 1975. The file keeps the succession: the Gold Rush fortune that dug Empire Mine, the water baron who built a country seat on his own watershed, the shipping heiress who gave it away — and the gardens the public inherited with the furniture gone and the house empty, refilled piece by piece by the families who'd lived in it.
Filoli is the archive's estate file — Bourn's 1917 Georgian house built on Empire gold and water-company land, the Roth gardens added by the second family, given to the Trust because it was 'too beautiful to be private.'
Why this file matters
Filoli is the archive's fortune file — the country estate one of America's finest, built with the Empire Mine's yield, kept whole by a donor who chose the public over the sale.
A house given away keeps its gardens — the file's suggestion being that Filoli's hold is the donation: the estate too beautiful to keep, the gardens the second family perfected, and the name Bourn built out of his own creed.
