Is Fitzgerald Theater haunted?

The record holds 2 claims, 1 legend, 1 named entity — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed documented legend. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

In 1985, workers renovating the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul peeled back a false ceiling and found a second balcony that no one knew existed. Inside the sealed space they found a note addressed to a long-dead stagehand named Ben. They took the note. And that, staff say, is when the haunting started.

Dark spots appeared where there were none. Cold and hot spots bloomed in a theater that had never had them. Tools vanished and turned up elsewhere. Two workers in a dark backstage area watched a heavy piece of ceiling plaster fall between them — in a theater whose ceiling isn't made of plaster — and looked up to see a dark figure on the catwalk sixty feet above the stage, vanishing.

The theater before the ghost

The building was born in 1910 as the Sam S. Shubert Theater — one of four memorial theaters the Shubert brothers built for their dead brother — modeled on the Maxine Elliott in New York. Minnesota Public Radio bought it in 1980, restored it, and from 1986 it became the home of Garrison Keillor's 'A Prairie Home Companion.' In 1994 it was renamed for F. Scott Fitzgerald, St. Paul's own lost writer.

Ben is believed to have been a stagehand from the theater's early decades who retired half a century before anyone found his balcony. Whether he's the man seen on the catwalk or the reason for the cold spots, employees eventually gave the presence his name — and reported that a nice man upstairs sometimes helped lost audience members find their way.

Ben and Veronica

Ben reportedly isn't alone. Staff have long reported a second presence — 'Vaudeville Veronica,' a performer from the theater's early days heard singing in the auditorium when the building is closed and dark. No one has ever seen her; the singing is all anyone gets.

The strangest footnote is the ending: after years of sightings, the reports around Ben faded. Old theater hands say the note being disturbed woke him — and that whatever was keeping him finally let him cross over. The theater, of course, keeps singing.

Why this file matters

The Fitzgerald is the archive's found-room file — a haunting that began the day a sealed balcony was opened and a dead stagehand's mail was disturbed. The documented renovation is the record; Ben and Veronica are the lore that a hundred-year-old theater generates whether it wants to or not.

A theater named for Fitzgerald keeps its ghosts in the balcony — the file's suggestion being that every stage has someone still working it long after the last show.
