The record — long form

The Geiser Grand is the Queen of the Mines — the 1889 Italianate hotel in Baker City, the finest hotel between Portland and Salt Lake, the third elevator west of the Mississippi. Granny Annabelle in the blue gown still descends the staircase; the hotel closed in 1968 and was restored in 1993.

The hotel was the boom — the $65,000 palace for the gold rush's Queen City, the stained glass ceiling and the mahogany and the marble. The Geiser family's mining fortune bought it in 1900; the ladies took tea on the balcony over the lobby.

The hotel is still there — the restored landmark, the Lady in Blue in room 302, the saloon girl on the balcony and the cowboy in the bar. The file keeps the hotel: the 1889 boom palace, the mining money, and the ghosts that are the Queen City's residents.

The Geiser Grand is the archive's boomtown file — the 1889 Queen of the Mines, the third elevator in the West, and the Lady in Blue who's still descending.

Why this file matters

The Geiser Grand is the archive's boomtown file — the mining palace, the elevator that was the third in the West, and the Lady in Blue who's the resident ghost.

A hotel that was the Queen keeps its lady — the file's suggestion being that the Geiser's hold is Annabelle: the blue gown on the stairs, the cupola room, and the ghost who's the hotel's permanent guest.

The record of claims

Documented legendApparition

Travel Oregon recounts guests’ reports of unusual sounds and apparitions. The hotel keeps the account on its own record — the sort of haunting a building earns one guest at a time. 'Oregon’s Haunted Spots' preserves the telling; the record keeps it filed where it belongs, as lore. The figure remains the site's most-repeated sighting.

Documented legend

Travel Oregon recounts guests’ reports of unusual sounds and apparitions. The Baker City hotel's reports are the kind old lodgings accumulate — footsteps after hours, presences in rooms, the house working the night shift. It's a documented legend: the telling is real, the contents remain folklore. The report is preserved in sources like 'Oregon’s Haunted Spots'. As folklore it's unkillable: the story is too good, and the place too fitting, to let go.

Documented history

  • Built in the 1880s, the hotel underwent restoration in the 1990s. A hotel with this much documented history gives the dossier real substance underneath the lore. Media accounts document it — reported history rather than legend. 'Oregon’s Haunted Spots' documents the entry. The detail belongs to the verified spine of the entry.
