The record — long form

Gimghoul Castle is the secret society's fortress — the 1926 stone castle on Point Prospect built for the Order of Gimghoul, UNC's mysterious fraternity. The legend is Peter Dromgoole — the student who enrolled 1833, loved Miss Fanny, lost the duel on the rock, was buried under it. The bloodstain is still shown; the story is fiction — the real Dromgoole failed his entrance exams and went to Europe. The duel was his uncle's.

Five students founded the Order in 1889 after President Kemp Battle told the legend — the Order of Dromgoole shortened to Gimghoul, the Arthurian mythology Wray Martin invented on the bluff. The castle took eleven years — the Waldensian stonemasons from Valdese building the meeting hall and the battlemented tower on the ninety-four acres. The members include governors and university presidents; the castle keeps its secrecy — the fraternity headquarters the students tell ghost stories about, on the rock where the fictional duel left real stains.

The file keeps Gimghoul Castle: the Dromgoole legend, the 1889 founding, the 1926 castle, and the continuing Order.

Gimghoul Castle is the archive's secret-society file — the castle built for a fictional duel.

Why this file matters

Gimghoul Castle is the archive's secret-society file — the Order's fortress on Dromgoole's rock.

A castle keeps its legend — the file's suggestion being that Gimghoul's hold is the invented past: the duel that never happened, the blood that still stains the rock, and the secret society that made a failed student's myth its foundation.
