Is Grayson Highlands haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Grayson Highlands is where the wild ponies are — the 1965 park near Mount Rogers where ponies were introduced in 1974 to keep the balds from reforesting, the Appalachian Trail stretch where hikers meet the herds. Fabio, the platinum-maned stallion, was the most famous.

The park was the balds — the cleared farmland that was becoming forest, the ponies that were the mowing crew, the Wilburn Ridge Pony Association that manages them. It was Mount Rogers State Park until the confusion forced the rename in 1975.

The park is still there — the 5,000-foot alpine peaks, the 100+ ponies on the balds, the AT crossing that makes it the trail's pony country. The file keeps the highlands: the 1965 founding, the 1974 ponies, and the balds that are Virginia's highest.

Grayson Highlands is the archive's pony file — the wild herds, the balds, and the park that's the AT's equine stretch.

Why this file matters

Grayson Highlands is the archive's pony file — the wild herds, the Mount Rogers balds, and the park that's the trail's most-loved stretch.

A park with wild ponies keeps its balds — the file's suggestion being that the highlands' hold is the grazing: the ponies that keep the balds open, the herds on the AT, and the park that's Virginia's highest.
