Is Historic L&N Depot haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed documented legend. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Etowah exists because of this building. In 1902 the Louisville & Nashville plotted a straighter Cincinnati–Atlanta main line that bypassed the Hiwassee River gorge, then bought 1,454 acres of McMinn County bottomland — ten to twenty dollars an acre — for a division terminal, shops, and an entire planned town. The depot went up first, in 1905–06: a two-story, fifteen-room yellow-pine Victorian, 36 by 140 feet, built for $13,000 and immediately acclaimed the finest station between Knoxville and Atlanta. The first train arrived in November 1906; by 1907 the platted town held more than 3,000 people.

The documented record

The complex — roundhouse, turntable, repair shops, a sixty-six-room YMCA hotel — ran the yards until the wood-to-steel conversion sent repair work to Knoxville after 1929. The Flamingo made the last passenger run in 1968; the depot closed to all rail use in 1974. It entered the National Register in 1977, and the railroad sold it to the city in 1981 for $35,000 — the price of a promise kept, since the restored depot opened as a museum beside a still-active CSX main line.

What's reported

Tennessee Tourism's haunted-destinations coverage files footsteps in the empty rooms and unexplained cigar smoke and perfume — the sort of reports a 120-year-old waiting room accumulates between trains. The depot's second history is filed as such: unofficial, unverified, and entirely in keeping with a building that outlived its timetable.

Documented legend
