Is Hopi House haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Hopi House is Colter's pueblo on the rim — the 1905 building Mary Colter designed to look like the Hopi dwellings at Oraibi, the Fred Harvey 'Indian Arts Building' that sold crafts and housed the Hopi workers who lived upstairs. It's still the shop on the South Rim.

The house was the imitation — the sandstone walls and tiny windows that mimicked the 1,000-year-old pueblos, the mud-plaster ceilings and corner fireplaces that were Colter's detail, the 'radically new experience' for tourists who'd never seen a Hopi village. Colter was the perfectionist who made the souvenir shop an architectural statement.

The house is still there — the gift shop on the rim, the least-altered Colter building, the pueblo that's been selling crafts for 120 years. The file keeps Hopi House: the 1905 construction, the Colter design, and the building that's the Grand Canyon's first architecture.

Hopi House is the archive's Colter file — the pueblo on the rim, the Fred Harvey shop, and the building that made park architecture.

Why this file matters

Hopi House is the archive's Colter file — the 1905 pueblo, the Fred Harvey shop, and the building that defined park design.

A house that mimics a pueblo keeps its rim — the file's suggestion being that Hopi House's hold is the imitation: the Oraibi model, the Hopi residents upstairs, and the shop that's still the canyon's.

Hopi House was built by the Fred Harvey Company as a market for Native American crafts, made by artisans on the site. The Hopi, as the historic inhabitants of the area, were chosen as the featured artisans, and the buildin
