Is Lake Mattamuskeet haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Lake Mattamuskeet is the lake they tried to drain — North Carolina's largest natural lake, the shallow 40,000 acres that the world's largest pumping station tried to turn into farmland. It drained three times between 1916 and 1926; nature won every time.

The lake was the ambition — the 1837 canal dug by enslaved people, the 1914 pump house that was the world's biggest, the village of New Holland that was built for the drainage workers. The lodge is still there; the lake came back.

The lake is still there — the wildlife refuge that's the Atlantic Flyway's wintering ground, the pump house that's a hotel, the water that defeated the engineers. The file keeps Mattamuskeet: the drainage schemes, the world's largest pump, and the lake that won.

Lake Mattamuskeet is the archive's drainage file — the pumped lake, the failed farmland, and the water that's still the refuge.

Why this file matters

Lake Mattamuskeet is the archive's drainage file — the lake that defeated the pumps, the world's largest pump house, and the refuge that nature reclaimed.

A lake that was drained keeps its water — the file's suggestion being that Mattamuskeet's hold is the return: the three drainages, the abandoned pumps, and the lake that's still the birds'.
