Is Lehman Caves haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed local folklore. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Lehman Caves is the cave with forty origin stories — nobody agrees how Absalom Lehman found it in 1885, whether his horse broke through the crust or his brother felt the wind from a hole, but the first tourists were in by August and the rancher was guiding them himself. The White Pine Reflex reported the 'cave of wondrous beauty' in April; by fall he'd built ladders and was charging admission.

Lehman died before his cave made him rich — 1891, six years after the discovery, the ranch sold and the dream deferred. The cave went quiet for decades, the formations wagoned to the state fair in Reno, the federal reserve absorbing the land around it. It became a National Monument in 1922 and part of Great Basin National Park in 1986 — the cave the rancher found and the park that grew around it.

The signatures are still inside — 'Dock' Baker and Dan Simonsen on July 4, 1885, the first recorded visitors' names scratched in the calcite. The file keeps the cave's uncertain beginning: the forty versions of the discovery, the rancher who opened it, and the cave that outlasted every story about how it was found.

Lehman Caves is the archive's discovery file — the 1885 cave with forty origin stories, the rancher who guided the first tours, and the signatures from the Fourth of July 1885 still on the walls.

Why this file matters

Lehman Caves is the archive's myth file — the cave whose discovery is legend, the 1885 signatures in the calcite, and the park that made the rancher's find the monument.

A cave with forty stories keeps its entrance — the file's suggestion being that Lehman's hold is the ambiguity: the horse or the brother or the hired hand, the first names scratched in '85, and the cave that's been telling its own legend since.
