Is Lost World Caverns haunted?

The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed local folklore. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Lost World Caverns is the cave that was a trash pit — the 1942 discovery that Virginia Tech made climbing down the 115-foot shaft the farmers had been using for dead livestock. The entrance was a rope drop into what turned out to be a mile of passages and a chamber bigger than Notre Dame's nave.

The cave kept its secrets — the prehistoric cave bear bones found in 1967, the terraced stalagmites and rimstone that made it a National Natural Landmark in 1973, and the 'Warclub' formation a man sat on for nearly sixteen days in 1971 to set a record. The Weekly World News put Bat Boy there in 1992; the band Sloppy Jane recorded an album in it in 2021.

The show cave came late — the walk-in entrance dug in 1968, the lighting in the '80s, the wild cave still there for the tours that go off-trail. The file keeps the cave's double life: the farmers' dump hole that became the landmark, and the underground room that holds the bear bones and the Bat Boy legend and the music.

Lost World Caverns is the archive's trash-to-treasure file — the 1942 discovery down the livestock-disposal shaft, the cave bear bones, the Notre Dame-sized chamber, and the Bat Boy legend that made it famous twice.

Why this file matters

Lost World is the archive's hidden-depth file — the cave that was a dump before it was a wonder, the prehistoric bear, and the underground room that's hosted both a sitting record and a rock album.

A cave that was a dump keeps its chamber — the file's suggestion being that Lost World's hold is the shaft: the 115-foot drop the farmers used for trash, the Tech researchers who climbed down it, and the room that was always there under the disposal pit.
