The record — long form
The country store at 104 West Murphy Street keeps its darkest chapter upstairs. The building went up in 1908 as Penn Hardware and spent years wearing several trades — hardware below, hotel rooms, and on the second floor the T.B. Knight Funeral Home. On Christmas Day 1929, in the farmhouse country outside town, tenant farmer Charlie Lawson killed his wife and six of their seven children before turning the gun on himself; only his sixteen-year-old son Arthur survived. The eight bodies were brought to the Knight embalming room above the store — the only room in the area equipped to prepare that many at once — and the funeral procession drew a crowd estimated in the thousands.
When Richard and Kathy Miller took the building in the early 1990s for a wholesale business, a man walked in with a photograph of eight shrouded bodies laid out in front of it. The Millers had not known. The store they built there is now Madison Dry Goods and Country Store, and the former embalming room holds the Lawson Family Murder Museum.
Twenty-eight days upstairs
The reported phenomena cluster where the bodies were prepared. Visitors and staff describe a little girl seen in the upstairs windows or sitting in the old visitation room with her feet dangling, disembodied voices, sudden cold spots, and jewelry — necklaces in particular — unclasping in the same spot near the museum exit. In 2022 Netflix's "28 Days Haunted" sealed investigators inside the building for a month, which carried the store's reputation well beyond Rockingham County.
The file files all of it as report rather than record. What is documented is the undertow beneath it: a real mass murder, a real embalming room, and a building that decided not to hide either.
