Is Mary Baldwin University haunted?
The record holds 1 claim, 1 legend — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed documented legend. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.
The record — long form
The school opened in 1842 as the Augusta Female Seminary and owes its survival — and its name — to Mary Julia Baldwin, a student who returned to run it and fought to keep it alive through the Civil War and Reconstruction. During the war the campus served as a hospital, and seminary students tended the wounded; the institution became Mary Baldwin Seminary in 1895, Mary Baldwin College in 1923, and Mary Baldwin University in 2016.
That hospital chapter supplies the lore's likeliest seed. The best-traveled of the campus spirits is a soldier students call Richard — seen as a blue uniform with gold buttons in the Administration Building, Wenger Hall, and Grafton Library, and blamed for the playful relocation of small objects. McClung Residence Hall, which swallowed the 1869 Brick House where Baldwin herself lived, reports a pale figure floating above beds and a child's handprint that periodically appears in her preserved room, number 103.
A cast of reported spirits
Other buildings keep their own accounts. A security guard in the King Building reported hearing a diver hit the pool, board-bounce and splash, and found flat, empty water — the pool was later removed entirely. Collins Theatre's moving lights and shifted objects have been credited to Tallulah Bankhead, who attended the school in the early twentieth century — though alumni note the theatre stands on ground that then belonged to Staunton Military Academy, not the college. Tourism coverage rounds it out with pictures found moved on their hooks.
The file treats the whole cast as campus tradition: reported, retold, and specific enough to locate, with the dates that separate legend from ledger.
The record of claims
Tourism recounts moved pictures and alleged campus spirits. An institution's ghosts are arithmetic: enough years, enough misery, and the reports write themselves. It's a documented legend: the telling is real, the contents remain folklore. The reports keep the place on every haunted list it qualifies for.
Tourism recounts moved pictures and alleged campus spirits. The institution's reports concentrate where the confinement was worst — the building's own floor plan supplies the map. The story is documented as legend — recorded and retold, never verified as fact. 'Staunton Haunted Locations' carries the account. Every community keeps one story like this; this is theirs.
