The record — long form
Edgefield is the poor farm that became a resort — the 1911 Multnomah County Poor Farm where 211 'inmates' moved in to farm their way to self-sufficiency, grew to 345 acres and 614 residents, and was bought by McMenamins in 1990 and turned into the brewery-and-hotel complex. The poor farm's meat-and-mush tables are the restaurants now.
The farm was the welfare idea — the progressive 'back to the land' institution that replaced Portland's disgraceful Hillside Farm, the county's answer to poverty that put the destitute to work on dairy cows and potatoes. The New Deal and WWII emptied it; it became the Edgefield Manor nursing home and closed in 1982.
The property is still there — the Georgian Revival lodge that's the hotel, the Black Rabbit Restaurant where the poor farm's dining room was, Lucky Staehly's pool hall named for the wheelchair-bound resident who became a pool shark. The file keeps the farm: the 1911 poor farm, the inmates' fields, and the resort that kept the buildings and the stories.
Edgefield is the archive's poor farm file — the 1911 county institution, the residents who farmed, and the McMenamins resort that preserved it.
Why this file matters
Edgefield is the archive's poor farm file — the progressive welfare institution, the inmates who worked the fields, and the resort that kept the buildings.
A poor farm that became a resort keeps its residents — the file's suggestion being that Edgefield's hold is the lodge: the dormitory that's the hotel, the dining room that's the restaurant, and the poor farm that's the destination.

Over the course of the century, the farm would come to be used as a nursing home before becoming abandoned in the 1980s.
