The record — long form

Wilson, the self-styled Czech Capital of Kansas, got its grand hotel in 1899 when Philadelphia transplant Wilke Power built the Power Hotel — three stories of native post-rock limestone, twenty-eight rooms, lit by acetylene gas, two hundred feet from the Union Pacific tracks midway between Kansas City and Denver. Traveling salesmen made its basement famous as the Sample Room, where they spread their wares between trains.

A November 1902 fire gutted the interior; rebuilt with modern heating, it reopened as the Midland Railroad Hotel and stayed first-class through the 1920s. The Depression had it raising chickens on the third floor for the dining room. Hollywood found it for "Paper Moon" in 1973; Agnes Hill kept it open alone until selling in the late 1970s; it closed in 1988 until a Wilson Foundation rescue and restoration brought it back, and it is listed on the National Register.

The girl on the third floor

Staff accounts collected in Kansas coverage center on the third floor and an orphaned girl heard running the hallway, knocking on doors, and jumping on beds — small footprints have been reported. One third-floor room carries the story that a sheriff was lynched there long ago, and the master key is said to work on it only sometimes.

Other reports tie to the 1902 fire: guests describe phantom smoke smells and flames that appear and vanish, and figures in period dress in the halls — lore the fire's survivors never corroborated, filed as account. The owner says the stories started coming out as soon as she bought the place; a Wichita paranormal team claims recordings of the child.

The archive files it as a hotel legend with an unusually cooperative setting: a burned floor, a famous steak, and a guest list that keeps asking for the third floor.

The record of claims

Local folkloreFootsteps

Local stories describe an orphan girl and small footsteps. The Wilson hotel's reports are the kind old lodgings accumulate — footsteps after hours, presences in rooms, the house working the night shift. Local lore carries the account; no documentation has ever caught up with it. The account appears in 'Bone Chilling Kansas Adventures - Haunted Places and…'. It's the sort of report that survives precisely because it asks you to listen, not look.

Local folklore

Local stories describe an orphan girl and small footsteps. The hotel keeps the account on its own record — the sort of haunting a building earns one guest at a time. The claim is neighborhood knowledge — retold locally, verified nowhere. The account appears in 'Bone Chilling Kansas Adventures - Haunted Places and…'. The story outranks the documentation, which is how you know it's folklore.
