Is Mosquito Bay haunted?
No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.
The record — long form
Mosquito Bay is the brightest water on earth — the Vieques lagoon where Pyrodinium bahamense, the 'whirling fire' dinoflagellate, concentrates 700,000 to the gallon and flashes blue-green when the water moves. Guinness made it official in 2006; the narrow mouth that keeps the organisms in and the mangroves that feed them made it natural. Named for the pirate Cofresí's ship — the Mosquito — the bay glows on dark nights like the water's on fire.
Hurricane Maria killed the glow in 2017 — the mangroves stripped, the shoreline eroded, eight months dark. The bay came back brighter — by 2019 the count was three million per gallon, the record broken by the bay itself. One of seven year-round bioluminescent bays in the Caribbean, and the brightest of them all — the water that lights when you touch it, the pirate's name on the most magical bay in the world.
The file keeps Mosquito Bay: the 700,000-per-gallon glow, the Cofresí name, the Maria blackout, and the comeback that tripled the record.
Mosquito Bay is the archive's glow file — the brightest bioluminescent water on earth.
Why this file matters
Mosquito Bay is the archive's glow file — the brightest bio bay and the comeback after Maria.
A bay keeps its fire — the file's suggestion being that Mosquito Bay's hold is the resilience: the dinoflagellates that went dark for eight months and came back brighter than the record, the water that still flashes blue-green under every paddle.

The Puerto Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay (Spanish: Bahía bioluminiscente de Puerto Mosquito), or Mosquito Bio Bay, is a bay in the island of Vieques famous for its bioluminescence produced by the dinoflagellate Pyrodinium bahamense, which glows blue when agitated. This species of phytoplankton is found in bays in the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and The Bahamas.
