The record — long form

The Napa River Inn is the warehouse where the son hung himself — Captain Albert Hatt's brick grain warehouse of 1884, built on the riverfront lot he got for a dollar, the skating rink and the oyster house and the wharf for his schooners making the Hatt Building the anchor of industrial Napa when the valley still grew wheat. The bricks were Napa River clay, fired on-site.

Albert Jr. hanged himself from a warehouse beam on April 1, 1912 — the widower with five children, the business troubles, the beam that's still in the building. The mill the warehouses became is the inn now; the Captain's son and Margaret his wife are the ghosts the staff report, the footsteps and the swaying dress in the halls of what was the feed store. The haunted mill books the rooms the hatts built.

The file keeps the Napa River Inn: the dollar lot, the 1884 warehouse, the 1912 suicide, and the ghosts in the wine-country inn.

The Napa River Inn is the archive's Napa file — the river warehouse and the son who never left the beam.

Why this file matters

The Napa River Inn is the archive's Napa file — the Hatt Building, the 1912 hanging, and the haunted mill.

A suicide's warehouse keeps his rooms — the file's suggestion being that the inn's hold is the beam: the April Fool's hanging that left Albert Jr. in the building, and the footsteps the guests still hear in the wine country's oldest inn.

The record of claims

Documented legendObjects Moving

Visit California recounts unusual sounds and self-emptying wine glasses. The Napa hotel's reports are the kind old lodgings accumulate — footsteps after hours, presences in rooms, the house working the night shift. It's a documented legend: the telling is real, the contents remain folklore. The pattern of small anomalies is itself the claim — none dramatic alone, persistent together.

Documented legend

Visit California recounts unusual sounds and self-emptying wine glasses. The hotel keeps the account on its own record — the sort of haunting a building earns one guest at a time. The story is documented as legend — recorded and retold, never verified as fact. The tale is the site's other archive — oral, embroidered, and outlasting the documents.
