The record — long form

Nevada State Prison operated from 1862 to 2012 — 150 years of the state's convicts, from the territorial era to the modern one, in a Carson City compound that held the state's execution site. The gas chamber saw 40 executions — the file's documented spine being the chamber's count: four dozen men put to death in the prison's documented machinery.

The prison's longevity is the file's register — a working penitentiary through the entire history of the state, closing only in 2012, the chamber's 40 dead the ledger the building holds.

Voices by the chamber

The reports describe voices near the chamber and a presence in the cells — the file's haunting being the prison's own geography: the execution site's dead reportedly still near the room where they died, the cell blocks holding a presence the closure didn't clear.

The chamber voices are the file's signature — 40 documented executions producing the site's most reported register, the gas chamber's dead the voices the reports describe.

Why this file matters

Nevada State Prison is the archive's execution-site file — 150 years of operation, 40 documented gas-chamber deaths, voices reported near the chamber and a presence in the cells. The 40 are the record; the voices are the register the chamber left.

A prison that executed 40 men keeps them near the chamber — the file's suggestion being that the state's death house still holds the men it processed.
