The record — long form

North Dakota State Hospital is the asylum that was always full — the 1885 territorial hospital that took its first two patients from Mandan and was over capacity within eighteen months. By 1890 patients slept two to a bed in the attics; by 1904 they were in the chicken coop; and the superintendent threatened to close rather than take another admission.

Dr. Archibald picked the cottage plan — the Custer surgeon who designed the hospital as a village instead of a Kirkbride, the European model that was supposed to imitate normal living. The farm was the therapy and the food — 425 animals on 1,600 acres, the patients milking and planting and harvesting the hospital's self-sufficiency.

The hospital is still there — still the state hospital, still on the cottage plan's campus, still the institution that opened before statehood. The file keeps the asylum's arithmetic: the hospital that was overcrowded from the first year, the farm that fed it, and the cottages that were supposed to be a village.

North Dakota State Hospital is the archive's overcrowded file — the 1885 asylum that was full before it opened, the cottage-plan village, and the farm that made the hospital self-sufficient.

Why this file matters

North Dakota State is the archive's capacity file — the asylum that never had enough beds, the cottage plan that tried to be humane anyway, and the farm that ran the hospital.

A hospital full from day one keeps its farm — the file's suggestion being that Jamestown's hold is the overflow: the patients in the chicken coop, the two-to-a-bed attics, and the cottage village that was supposed to fix what the territory couldn't afford.
