The record — long form

Oak Island, North Carolina is the other Oak Island — no money pit here, just a barrier island at the mouth of the Cape Fear River where a hurricane carved New Inlet in 1761 and the river pilots followed. The treasure this island guarded was Wilmington's shipping lane, and its story is told in lighthouses: brick range lights lit in 1849, blown up by retreating Confederates who preferred rubble to Union hands, rebuilt on skids that could slide with the shifting channel, then replaced in 1958 by the concrete tower that still stands at Caswell Beach.

That 1958 lighthouse is North Carolina's youngest — and for its first four years, the brightest light in the United States, visible 24 nautical miles out. It was built not of painted steel but of concrete with the pigment mixed straight into the pour, so it has never needed repainting. There is no spiral staircase inside, just 131 steps of ship's ladders. When the Coast Guard station next door caught fire in 2002, the tower survived; in 2004 it was deeded to the town of Caswell Beach, which keeps it lit by volunteer labor.

The island itself spent the nineteenth century as Fort Caswell's neighbor — the life-saving station of 1889, the surfmen rowing into the Graveyard of the Atlantic. The file keeps this Oak Island: the inlet the hurricane cut, the lights the Confederates destroyed, and the youngest lighthouse on the Carolina coast — which, unlike its Nova Scotian namesake, hides nothing but still draws the curious.

Oak Island NC is the archive's disambiguation file — the lighthouse island, not the treasure island, and the proof that the real history needs no buried gold.

Why this file matters

Oak Island is the archive's disambiguation file — the Carolina island with the 1958 lighthouse, the Confederate-blown range lights, and a history entirely separate from the Nova Scotia legend.

An island famous for a name it shares keeps its own light — the file's suggestion being that Oak Island NC's hold is the contrast: no treasure hunt, just 170 years of keeping ships off the shoals.
