The record — long form

The file is a single account, and it is a vivid one. Around 1978, a bow hunter walking a cleared ridge above Oil Creek near Burnsville, in Braxton County, spotted something large and black lying at the edge of a hay field, knees up, about 250 yards off. When it stood and started toward him he judged it near nine feet tall, covering ground in five-foot strides, its face dark and leathery under four inches of black hair. Assuming a hunting-season prank, he shouted a warning. It kept coming anyway; he left.

The account is anonymous, submitted decades later and republished by the county visitors bureau, which has made Braxton's cryptid file a tourism draw — this is the county that keeps the Flatwoods Monster legend and, since 2021, the West Virginia Bigfoot Museum in Sutton. The dossier flags the map point as an unverified coordinate and the land as private.

How the archive reads it

There is exactly one witness, one telling, and no physical evidence — the minimum unit of American place-lore. What gives the report staying power is its plainness: no chase, no supernatural flourish, just a hunter narrating a bad minute on a ridge. The file preserves it as a reported experience, nothing more — which is also the most honest description of every file like it.
