Is Old Avoca Townsite haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Old Avoca is a town that exists mainly as a plat. In 1857 speculators filed a townsite in Avoca precinct, Cass County — the name likely drawn from the same Thomas Moore lyric, 'Sweet Vale of Avoca,' that christened a dozen American towns — at a spot the state ghost-town survey places three miles east of the present village.

Documented history

The 1937 Nebraska History inventory classes the site among the county's 'paper towns': platted, named, and never substantially built. As with several Cass County filings of the 1850s, the plat waited for railroads that went elsewhere. When a rail line did reach the precinct decades later, the modern village of Avoca rose at the tracks, three miles west of the original paper plat, and inherited the name without the townsite.

Nothing in the record establishes surviving construction at the 1857 site — no ruins are claimed, and no visitor parcel is on file. The entry documents the plat itself: the layer of the landscape that exists only in the surveyor's ledger.

Documented history

  • Paper town platted in 1857, three miles east of modern Avoca. A documented history gives the file real substance; this entry is part of that spine. The fact is historically verified — the part of the file that doesn't need hedging. 'Nebraska Ghost Towns, Nebraska History 18 (1937), 181–191' documents the entry. The entry's timeline holds it; the lore holds the rest.
