Is Old Sheldon Church Ruins haunted?

No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.

The record — long form

Old Sheldon Church is the ruin that burned twice — the 1753 Greek temple church that was the first attempt in America to imitate a Greek temple, burned by the British in 1779, rebuilt in 1825, and destroyed again in 1865. The columns and the walls still stand in the Lowcountry oaks.

The church was the revolution's target — the political and military center where Continental troops drilled, where the Bull family vault hid arms, where Prevost's British burned it in 1779. The 1865 destruction is disputed — a letter says it wasn't burned but 'torn up in the inside' by locals salvaging materials to rebuild.

The ruin is still there — the columns and the walls among the live oaks and Spanish moss, Governor Bull's grave before the altar, the National Register site that's more beautiful as a ruin than most churches are whole. The file keeps the church: the 1753 temple, the two destructions, and the ruin that's the Lowcountry's monument.

Old Sheldon Church is the archive's ruin file — the first Greek temple church, the two burnings, and the columns that stand in the moss.

Why this file matters

Old Sheldon Church is the archive's ruin file — the first Greek Revival church in America, the Revolution and Civil War destructions, and the ruin that's the Lowcountry's icon.

A church that burned twice keeps its columns — the file's suggestion being that Sheldon's hold is the ruin: the walls that survived both wars, Bull's grave, and the temple that's more famous destroyed than standing.
