Is Porcupine Mountains haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

The Porcupine Mountains are two billion years old — a worn-down fragment of one of the oldest mountain chains on earth, rising 1,958 feet straight out of Lake Superior in a twelve-mile escarpment the Ojibwe named for a crouching porcupine. The park they anchor — the Porkies — is Michigan's largest state park, and its 35,000 acres of uncut hemlock and hardwood are the biggest virgin forest left between the Adirondacks and the Rockies.

The mountains nearly didn't survive. Prospectors swarmed in during the 1844 copper rush — the Carp Lake and Nonesuch mines scratched the slopes and produced almost nothing — and by the twentieth century the timber cruisers had priced every tree. A 1945 deal between the state and a conservation coalition saved the forest just ahead of the saws, creating a wilderness park where the old-growth canopy still stands over Lake of the Clouds.

The file keeps the Porkies: the porcupine's back the Ojibwe saw in the ridge, the failed copper diggings under the trees, and the 35,000 acres of forest that made it to the present uncut — the largest such stand in North America.

Porcupine Mountains is the archive's old-growth file — the two-billion-year escarpment, the copper that wasn't there, and the virgin forest that survived by a single act of 1945.

Why this file matters

The Porcupine Mountains is the archive's old-growth file — Michigan's largest park, the continent's biggest virgin northern hardwood tract, and the escarpment the Ojibwe named.

A forest saved in one year keeps its canopy — the file's suggestion being that the Porkies' hold is the near-miss: the cruisers' tally sheets, the 1945 rescue, and the trees that never felt a saw.

The Porcupine Mountains, or Porkies, are a group of small mountains spanning the northwestern Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Ontonagon and Gogebic counties, near the shore of Lake Superior. The Porcupine Mountains were named by the native Ojibwa people, supposedly because their silhouette had the shape of a crouching porcupine. They are home to the most extensive stand of old growth northern hardwood forest in North America west of the Adirondack Mountains, spanning at least 31,000 acres (13,000 ha). The area is popular among tourists, especially Lake of the Clouds in the heart of the mountains, and is part of Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The Porcupine Mountains were the site o
