Is Red Lion Inn haunted?

The record holds 2 claims, 1 legend, 1 named entity — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed documented legend. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

The Red Lion Inn has been running on the corner of Main and Pine in Stockbridge since 1773 — through the Revolution it helped foment, the stagecoach era it was built for, the Gilded Age that made the Berkshires, a fire that burned it to the ground in 1896, and the century and a quarter since it reopened. Silas Pepoon built it as a tavern on the Albany-to-Boston post road; the year after it opened, angry citizens were already meeting there to pass resolutions against the Intolerable Acts. The inn's sign — a red lion with a green tail — was read as a quiet statement: the crown's beast with the colonies' color.

Mrs. Plumb filled it with colonial antiques in the 1870s — the largest collection of early American furniture and china in the country — and when the fire took the building in 1896, the town turned out to save the collection before it saved the structure. The inn rebuilt in eight months and reopened in May 1897, essentially the building that stands now: a rambling white colonial that has hosted presidents from Cleveland to Roosevelt, Hawthorne, Longfellow, Wilder, and Norman Rockwell, who lived a block away and put the inn into the American imagination one painting at a time.

The haunting is concentrated on the fourth floor — a man in a top hat, a young girl carrying flowers, cold spots in rooms that housekeeping staff have whispered about for decades. Room 301 has its own file of guest reports going back twenty years: sheets tugged, toes pulled, the sensation of someone settling onto the bed. The management acknowledges the reports the way a two-hundred-fifty-year-old inn should — without alarm and without denial.

What haunts the Red Lion isn't a tragedy — it's continuity. The building burned and came back in a season; the collection was carried out through the flames by the town itself. Whatever is on the fourth floor has had a very long time to settle in.

Why this file matters

The Red Lion is the archive's continuity file — an inn that hosted a revolution's resolutions and Norman Rockwell's neighborhood, burned flat and rebuilt inside a year, and kept its fourth-floor ghosts through all of it.

An inn that survived its own burning keeps its fourth floor — the file's suggestion being that the Red Lion's ghosts are the rarest kind: not the residue of a single night but the accumulation of two hundred fifty years of guests, some of whom simply never checked out.
