Is Rutland Prison Camp and Hospital haunted?
No claims are filed here — the record keeps this place for its documented history, not for a haunting on file.
The record — long form
In 1903 the Massachusetts General Court established an industrial camp where prisoners could reclaim and improve 'wasted lands,' and the Commonwealth bought 914 acres in Rutland for it. Inmates serving sentences for drunkenness and other minor offenses built the place into a working farm: 150 acres in crops, potatoes shipped to the state prison, a dairy barn of sixty pure-bred Holsteins sending milk to Worcester — a reported $5,000 a year in farm profit plus $11,000 in egg income.
Documented history
A thirty-bed hospital for prisoners with tuberculosis was added in 1907, giving the camp its dual identity as labor farm and sanatorium. It ran until November 30, 1934, when the state closed it for a reason that had nothing to do with the inmates: the property lay in the drainage area of a water supply, and the land and buildings were sold to the Metropolitan District Water Supply Commission.
The town's official history records the whole arc without embellishment, and the file notes what the record does not do — it documents an institution and its closure, not a haunting. Ruins of the camp still stand in the woods that grew back over the farm fields, now part of the Rutland State Park landscape; the grounds' stewardship rules apply before any visit.
