The record — long form

Sprague Mansion is the house where Rhode Island's first family rose and collapsed. The conjoined buildings — a c.1790 house and an 1864 addition — were the seat of the Sprague clan: the textile empire that made Cranston, two governors named William Sprague, and a murder that changed the state's courts. Amasa Sprague's 1843 killing nearby produced the Gordon trial — the last execution in Rhode Island history and the reason the state abolished the death penalty.

The second Governor William Sprague — elected 1860, first to answer Lincoln's call for troops, wounded at Bull Run — brought the house its most famous chapter: his 1863 marriage to Kate Chase, the Treasury Secretary's daughter and Washington's most glamorous woman. The fortune collapsed in the Panic of 1873; the marriage ended after Kate's affair with Roscoe Conkling — the scandal that broke what the panic hadn't.

The mansion went to the Cranston Print Works as a manager's residence, then to the Cranston Historical Society in the 1960s — the Sprague parlor restored, the carriage house stocked with the family's sleighs and pony carts. The house holds the full arc: the mill empire, the governor's war, Kate Chase's Washington, and the bankruptcy that scattered it all.

Sprague Mansion is the archive's dynasty file — the Cranston seat of the Spragues, birthplace of two governors, site of the 1843 murder that ended Rhode Island executions, and the house where William and Kate Chase's Washington marriage rose and fell.

Why this file matters

Sprague Mansion is the archive's panic file — the 1790/1864 Cranston house of the Sprague dynasty: two governors, the Amasa Sprague murder that ended capital punishment in Rhode Island, and the fortune that died in 1873.

A mansion that outlasted its dynasty keeps its parlor — the file's suggestion being that Sprague's hold is the arc: the rise from the mills to the governor's chair to the scandal and the Panic that took it all.
