The record — long form

The Rice is the hotel on the republic's capitol ground — the corner of Texas Avenue where the Allen brothers put the wooden capitol in 1837 to make Houston a city, where Anson Jones, the republic's last president, killed himself in 1858 when it was a hotel. William Marsh Rice bought the 1881 successor; Jesse Jones leveled it for the seventeen-story Rice Hotel that opened in 1913, the C-shaped pile that ran Houston's political life for decades.

The university inherited the land with the hotel — Rice Institute's 99-year lease to Jones, the ground floor where Houston's deals were cut, the Crystal Ballroom and the Rice Lofts it became. Three buildings deep on the same block: the capitol that made a republic's city, the hotel that made a university, the landmark that's still the address on Texas Avenue.

The file keeps the Rice: the Republic's capitol site, the Jones suicide, the 1913 rebuild, and the hotel that funded a university.

The Rice is the archive's Houston file — the capitol ground and the hotel that paid for Rice University.

Why this file matters

The Rice is the archive's Houston file — the Republic capitol site and the 1913 Jesse Jones hotel.

A hotel on a capitol's ground keeps its layers — the file's suggestion being that the Rice's hold is the stacked history: the republic's building, the president's suicide, and the landmark that leased itself to fund the university bearing its name.

The Rice, formerly the Rice Hotel, is a historical building at 909 Texas Avenue in Downtown Houston, Texas, United States. The current building is the third to occupy the site. It was completed in 1913 on the site of the former Capitol of the Republic of Texas, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The old Capitol was operated as a hotel until it was torn down and replaced by a new hotel around 1881. Jesse H. Jones built a new seventeen-story, double-winged hotel in 1913, also called "The Rice Hotel." This building underwent major expansions: adding a third wing in 1925, adding an eighteenth floor in 1951, and adding a five-story "motor lobby" in 1958. In addition, there
