Is Thermopolis haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Thermopolis is the town the hot water bought — home to what promoters call the world's largest mineral hot spring, a flow of 130-degree water that rises through the Thermopolis Anticline where Owl Creek meets the Bighorn. The Shoshone knew the springs first and held them sacred; fur trapper Daniel Potts wrote home about them in 1826. When the Wind River Reservation was drawn in 1868, the springs went inside it — which didn't stop the squatters in tents and dugouts soaking at the edges, or the 'Hotel de Sagebrush' renting pole-and-brush rooms to the pilgrims.

The springs' transfer is the town's founding wound. In the 1890s, white settlers pressed Chief Washakie to sell; an 1891 deal for $5,000 failed in Congress, and the final 1896-97 agreement moved the springs — and 55,000 acres around them — to federal and then state hands for a fraction of their worth. The treaty carried one clause the town still honors: the water must be free to the public. Hot Springs State Park keeps it — the free bathhouses run on the spring's 3,000 gallons a minute.

The file keeps Thermopolis: the sacred springs, the reservation sale, and the town named 'hot city' that still gives its water away — the treaty clause that outlived everything else in the deal.

Thermopolis is the archive's springs file — the world's largest mineral spring, the Washakie cession, and the water that's free by treaty.

Why this file matters

Thermopolis is the archive's springs file — the sacred springs, the 1897 sale off the reservation, and the free-water clause still running.

A spring sold for $60,000 keeps its promise — the file's suggestion being that Thermopolis's hold is the treaty: the water was bought, but the bathing stayed free, and the park is still honoring it.

The record of claims

AnecdotalApparition

Reported a presence at the springs. A Wyoming town's lore is municipal property; Thermopolis keeps this account in its unofficial archive. The file holds testimony rather than proof; the claim remains anecdotal. The figure remains the site's most-repeated sighting. The lore keeps its witness. The lore keeps its witness.

Documented history

  • The springs’ geology is documented. Thermopolis' documented history is the record the rest of the file stands on. The fact is historically verified — the part of the file that doesn't need hedging. 'Thermopolis' documents the entry. It is the kind of fact the rest of the dossier leans on. The telling survives; the proof stays folklore.
