The record — long form

The Tulsa Theater is the hall that held the massacre — the 1914 Convention Hall that was the biggest between Kansas City and Houston, remodeled by Bruce Goff in 1930 into the Art Deco 'Old Lady of Brady,' and used in 1921 as the detention center where the city's Black citizens were held while Greenwood burned. The building was named for Tate Brady — the founder, Klansman, and massacre participant — until the city stripped the name in 2019.

The stage history is real: one of sixteen American houses equipped for the Met, the roadshows and the conventions, the Goff interior of gilded grilles and green pendants. But the file's center is the basement and the holding — the hall that was the city's pride became its jail in the three days when the city destroyed its own district, and the renaming was the reckoning the building had to have.

The file keeps the Tulsa Theater: the 1914 hall, the Goff remodel, the 1921 detention, and the name that had to come off.

The Tulsa Theater is the archive's massacre file — the grandest hall in Oklahoma and the place where the city held the people it was burning.

Why this file matters

The Tulsa Theater is the archive's massacre file — the 1914 hall, the Greenwood detention, and the Brady name removed.

A theater that was a jail keeps the memory — the file's suggestion being that the building's hold is the double history: the opera and the internment, the Old Lady on Brady and the people she held while the city burned.
