Is Tuzigoot haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Tuzigoot is the hilltop pueblo the Depression excavated — a Southern Sinagua village that grew on a ridge above the Verde River for four hundred years, from about 1000 to 1400 AD, adding rooms south and east until it held perhaps 250 people. Its builders were traders on a continental scale: the excavation pulled out macaw feathers from Mexico, shells from the Sea of Cortez, obsidian from distant volcanoes — proof that this hilltop was a node in a network that ran from the Colorado Plateau to the Amazon.

The dig that revealed it was relief work. In the winter of 1933–34, University of Arizona students Louis Caywood and Edward Spicer led a Civil Works Administration crew of nearly fifty local unemployed through the ruin — one of the largest excavations ever run in the Verde Valley, and the largest single mortuary sample from a prehistoric Southwestern site: 411 burials, 429 individuals, found under the floors of the rooms they'd lived in. The monument was proclaimed in 1939 on the strength of what they found.

The pueblo emptied around 1400; its people probably moved toward the Hopi mesas and the Winslow area, leaving the hill to the river and the wind. The file keeps Tuzigoot: the four-century pueblo, the WPA dig, and the ridge that still holds the valley's best view.

Tuzigoot is the archive's hilltop file — the Sinagua trade hub, the 1933 excavation, and the pueblo above the Verde.

Why this file matters

Tuzigoot is the archive's hilltop file — the 400-year pueblo, the Depression-era excavation, and the macaw feathers that proved the trade.

A village dug by relief workers keeps its ridge — the file's suggestion being that Tuzigoot's hold is the project: the CWA paychecks, the 429 burials, and the ruin rebuilt by the people it employed.

The Tuzigoot Site is an elongated complex of stone masonry rooms that were built along the spine of a natural outcrop in the Verde Valley. The central rooms stand higher than the others and they appear to have served public functions. The pueblo has 110 rooms. The National Park Service currently administers 58 acres (23 hectares), within an authorized boundary of 834 acres (338 hectares). ″Tú Digiz/Tuzigoot″ is a Tonto Apache term for "crooked waters,

AnecdotalApparition

Reported figures at the pueblo. The reports at Tuzigoot are the site's second history — unofficial, unverified, and stubbornly retold. The file holds testimony rather than proof; the claim remains anecdotal. The report is preserved in sources like 'Tuzigoot'. The apparition is the file's anchor — every other report orbits it.

Documented history

  • The 12th-14th century pueblo is documented. A documented history gives the file real substance; this entry is part of that spine. This belongs to the verified spine of the entry, the layer everything else is measured against. The record appears in 'Tuzigoot'. The date is part of the site's documented spine.
