The record — long form
Notre Dame was built in a wilderness by a priest who couldn't speak the language. In November 1842 Father Edward Sorin and seven Holy Cross brothers came three hundred miles north from Vincennes through the cold to a frozen lake in northern Indiana — the land Father Badin had deeded for a school — and founded the university in a log chapel. Sorin was twenty-eight, French, and ambitious beyond reason: he said from the beginning that the school would become one of the most powerful means for good in the country, and he built toward it.
The campus grew on faith and fire. The Basilica of the Sacred Heart rose in Gothic Revival between 1870 and 1892 — Sorin's French taste made permanent, with stained glass from Le Mans and the steeple that took twenty years. The Main Building's Golden Dome, topped with the statue of Mary that weighed forty-four hundred pounds, became the campus's signature the year it went up. The Grotto Sorin built in 1896 is a seventh-scale replica of Lourdes — the shrine he wanted because he'd been to the original and the school should have its own.
The university survived what killed most of its peers — the pre-Civil War college mortality rate, the anti-Catholic Know-Nothing movement that was at its height when Sorin arrived, the fire of 1879 that burned the Main Building to the ground and was rebuilt bigger in a summer. It became the school the football team made famous and the basilica made sacred — the two identities it has kept in the same campus.
Notre Dame is the archive's cathedral file — the university built by a French priest on a frozen lake, that burned and rebuilt, that keeps the Golden Dome and the Grotto and the basilica as the architecture of a mission that outlasted the frontier it was founded on.
Why this file matters
Notre Dame is the archive's founding file — the college Sorin built in a wilderness he couldn't speak the language of, that survived the Know-Nothings and the fire and became the university he announced it would be, keeping the Dome and the Grotto as the proof.
A university built on faith keeps its dome — the file's suggestion being that Notre Dame's hold is the vision: the campus that Sorin saw on the frozen lake in 1842 and built until it matched, the dome that has been the landmark since the statue went up.
