The record — long form

USP Leavenworth is the Big House — the first federal penitentiary, built 1897-1920s by the prisoners who would live in it, and the largest maximum-security prison in America for a century. The walls are forty feet high and forty feet below ground.

The inmates were the famous — Machine Gun Kelly, Robert Stroud the Birdman who did his bird work here before Alcatraz, Carl Panzram hanged in 1930, Whitey Bulger, Michael Vick, James Earl Ray. The prison built by the prisoners held the century's most notorious criminals.

The prison is still there — downgraded to medium security in 2005, still holding about 1,670 inmates, still the original Big House. The file keeps the scale: the walls that are the maximum-security icon, the inmates who made it famous, and the building that's still the federal system's first.

Leavenworth is the archive's prison file — the first federal penitentiary, the Birdman's birds, and the walls that are the Big House's icon.

Why this file matters

Leavenworth is the archive's federal file — the first penitentiary, the Birdman's work, and the prison that was the country's biggest maximum for a hundred years.

A prison built by its prisoners keeps its walls — the file's suggestion being that Leavenworth's hold is the scale: the 40-foot walls, the inmates who built them, and the Big House that's still the federal system's original.
