Is Walnut Canyon haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Walnut Canyon is the cliff city the Sinagua built — a canyon twenty miles long and four hundred feet deep cut by Walnut Creek through the plateau east of Flagstaff, where the 'people without water' made their homes in the rock. After Sunset Crater erupted around 1085, the population grew; around 1150 they began building into the canyon's limestone alcoves — rooms tucked under the rim, farming the canyon top above.

The community thrived for about 150 years. The Island Trail today drops 240 stairs to a promontory ringed by twenty-five of the dwelling rooms, and across the canyon more rooms are visible in the walls — the largest concentration of cliff dwellings in the Flagstaff area. By the early 1300s the canyon was empty again, its people moved on to join the Hopi and Zuni; the canyon kept their rooms.

President Wilson made it a national monument in 1915 — one of the earlier protections for a Southwestern ruin, prompted partly by the pot-hunting that had already emptied some of the alcoves. The file keeps Walnut Canyon: the Sinagua, the eruption that brought them, and the alcove rooms still in the cliff face.

Walnut Canyon is the archive's alcove file — the Sinagua cliff city, the Island Trail, and the dwellings emptied by 1300.

Why this file matters

Walnut Canyon is the archive's alcove file — the 1150 cliff dwellings, the Sinagua adaptation, and the canyon still holding its rooms.

A canyon farmed from above keeps its alcoves — the file's suggestion being that Walnut's hold is the verticality: the fields on the rim, the rooms in the wall, and the people who moved between them.

Walnut Canyon National Monument (Hopi: Wupatupqa) is a United States National Monument located about 10 mi (16 km) southeast of downtown Flagstaff, Arizona, near Interstate 40. The canyon rim elevation is 6,690 ft (2,040 m); the canyon's floor is 350 ft (110 m) lower. A 0.9 mi (1.4 km) long loop trail descends 185 ft (56 m) into the canyon passing 25 cliff dwelling rooms constructed by the Sinagua, a pre-Columbian cultural group that lived in Walnut Canyon from about 1100 to 1250 AD. Other contemporary habitations of the Sinagua people are preserved in the nearby Tuzigoot and Montezuma Castle national monuments.
