The record — long form

Wesleyan College is the first — the Georgia Female College chartered December 23, 1836, the first college in the world chartered to grant degrees to women. The first class graduated July 18, 1840; the degree was the equivalent of the men's bachelor's, two hundred years after Harvard started giving them to men.

The college was the proof — the rigorous classical curriculum that matched the men's colleges, the natural science that was unique for women's education, the first sororities and the first alumnae association. The Methodist school in Macon proved women could take the same degree; the world followed.

The college is still there — moved to the Rivoli campus in 1928, the original buildings burned in 1963, and the school is still women's-only. The file keeps the first: the 1836 charter, the 1840 degrees that were the world's first for women, and the college that's still proving it.

Wesleyan is the archive's first file — the world's first degree-granting women's college, the 1840 first graduates, and the Macon school that's still leading.

Why this file matters

Wesleyan is the archive's first file — the first college in the world to grant women degrees, the 1840 class that proved it, and the school that's still women's.

A college that was the world's first keeps its charter — the file's suggestion being that Wesleyan's hold is the degree: the 1836 charter, the first women's bachelor's in history, and the school that's still the proof.
