Is Winslow haunted?

The record holds 1 claim — filed as reported, not verified. The heaviest filing is classed anecdotal. The archive documents the claim; it takes no position on the ghost.

The record — long form

Winslow is the town a song saved — a Santa Fe Railway division point that became a Route 66 stop and then, in 1972, a line in 'Take It Easy.' The corner of Second and Kinsley is now a pilgrimage site where a hundred thousand people a year stand on the corner and take the photograph the Eagles never quite described.

The town's real monument is La Posada — Mary Colter's 1930 masterpiece, the last and finest of the Fred Harvey hotels, built as a fiction: Colter invented a Spanish don's hacienda that had stood on the site for 120 years, and designed the hotel as if generations had expanded it. It closed in 1957, was gutted for railroad offices, and sat on the demolition list until Allan Affeldt and artist Tina Mion bought it in 1997 and restored it room by room. Amtrak's Southwest Chief still stops at its platform twice a day.

The file keeps Winslow: the Harvey House masterpiece, the corner that a song made famous, and the town that learned to live on the memory of Route 66 after I-40 took the traffic.

Winslow is the archive's corner file — the Colter hotel, the Eagles lyric, and the town that stood back up.

Why this file matters

Winslow is the archive's corner file — La Posada's fiction made real, the 1972 song, and the park where fans stand on the corner.

A town saved by a lyric keeps its corner — the file's suggestion being that Winslow's hold is the convergence: Colter's invented hacienda, the Eagles' invented girl in the Ford, and the real corner both made famous.

The record of claims

AnecdotalApparition

Reported figures in the historic district. A Arizona town's lore is municipal property; Winslow keeps this account in its unofficial archive. It's anecdotal evidence in the strictest sense — stories, repeated, unresolved. Sources including 'Winslow' keep the claim in circulation. The figure remains the site's most-repeated sighting.

Documented history

  • The town’s railroad history is documented. The record dates it to 1882. Winslow's documented history is the record the rest of the file stands on. The fact is historically verified — the part of the file that doesn't need hedging. The detail is preserved in 'Winslow'. The date is part of the site's documented spine.
