Cemeteries

The difference between a burial ground that merely holds the dead and one that is said to keep them is a filing distinction the archive takes seriously. Cemetery dossiers record monuments and dates on one side, reports of figures among the markers and lights over the graves on the other. Some of these grounds are meticulously documented; others survive only in the reports about them. Both kinds are filed the same way — what is known, and what is said.
