Ghost towns
A settlement the census abandoned before the stories did. Ghost towns in this archive range from scraped foundations to intact main streets, and their filings share a common shape: a documented collapse — a mine played out, a railroad rerouted, a river moved — followed by a second life in the record as reports of figures, lights and sounds in structures nobody maintains. The dossiers keep both lives on file and do not ask the reader to reconcile them.
