  2. 1867event
    Wagon Box Fight Site

On August 2, 1867, thirty-two soldiers and woodcutters fought off hundreds of Lakota and Cheyenne attackers from behind a corral of wagon boxes west of Fort Phil Kearny — the new breech-loading rifles making the difference. Casualty claims were wildly exaggerated at the time, but the stand became instant frontier legend.
