Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island held out through the Battle of Mobile Bay before surrendering on August 8, 1864, once Union troops landed and siege guns were emplaced — three days after Farragut's fleet forced the passage. Its well-preserved brick bastions still watch the channel Farragut charged, and the fort's 'anchor and torpedo' displays tell the naval story.
