- 1862eventFort Donelson National Battlefield
On February 16, 1862, Grant accepted the surrender of Fort Donelson and some 12,000 Confederates — the South's first catastrophic loss, which opened the Cumberland River to Nashville and coined 'Unconditional Surrender' Grant. The river batteries and the Dover Hotel where Buckner signed still stand on a battlefield the NPS calls one of its best preserved.
