- 1890eventWindsor Ruins
On February 17, 1890, a houseguest dropped a cigarette into debris on an upper floor of Windsor — the grandest antebellum mansion in Mississippi — and the house burned down to its 23 standing columns. Built in 1861, the mansion had survived the Civil War only to die of a carelessly tossed match; the columns are now the state's most photographed ruin.
