- 1820eventOld Charleston Jail
Lavinia Fisher and her husband John were hanged on February 18, 1820, outside the Old Charleston Jail for highway robbery — not, despite the famous legend, for being America's first female serial killers. Historians dismantled the 'murdering innkeeper' story decades ago, yet she remains the jail's signature ghost: a legend that is itself now two hundred years old.
