On January 6, 1884, prospector Pete Walters found gold at Gold Rock in the Cargo Muchacho Mountains — a discovery that drew hundreds into the desert and launched the camp that became Tumco (earlier Hedges), a company town that briefly housed over 1,000 people before the ore ran thin and the desert took it back. Its cyanide tanks and foundations remain.
