- 1946eventAlcatraz Island
On May 2, 1946, six inmates overpowered guards and seized weapons in a meticulously planned escape attempt that failed at the cell-house door. For two days they held the block while Marines shelled the prison — the 'Battle of Alcatraz' left two guards and three inmates dead, and two conspirators were later executed at San Quentin.
