- 1867eventHoosac Tunnel
On October 17, 1867, an explosion in the Hoosac Tunnel's thousand-foot central shaft ignited the hoist house and dropped burning debris onto the men below; flooding followed, entombing 13 workers whose bodies were not recovered for a year. The 'Bloody Pit' earned its name — 195 men died building the tunnel over twenty-four years.
