The record — long form

The Addy Sea is the survivor of a Pittsburgh plumber's beach colony. John M. Addy built the cedar-shingled Victorian around 1901–1902 as his family's summer retreat — the fourth of five Addy cottages that made the family one of Bethany Beach's 'Six First Families,' and the one a town marker calls his masterpiece: among the first houses in town with indoor plumbing and gaslights. After coastal storms, the whole house was hauled westward in 1927 by manpower, mules, and logs. It opened as a guest house in 1935 and took boarders through the Depression, eventually passing to the Gravatte family, who restored its tin ceilings and ran it as a bed-and-breakfast.

The room-by-room file

WHYY's survey of Delaware's haunted locations puts the reported activity in three rooms, and the retellings are consistent: Room 1's copper bathtub allegedly shakes violently; Room 6 emits organ music though no organ exists in the house; Room 11 is assigned to a former handyman, named in the lore as Paul Delaney, with tubs said to turn themselves on and phones that die. One guest counter-filed that she stayed three nights and encountered nothing at all.

Everything paranormal here is reported rather than established, and the dossier says so, noting that the operating details want current verification. What the archive has instead is a house with an unusually good documented spine — moved on logs, plumbed before the town was, a century and a quarter of guests — and a haunting map specific enough to name the fixtures.

The record of claims

Documented legendUnspecified Haunting

WHYY identifies rooms 1, 6 and 11 as alleged activity locations. Addy Sea, a hotel in Bethany Beach, Delaware, has kept the story in circulation longer than most of its guest registers. It's a documented legend: the telling is real, the contents remain folklore. The report is preserved in sources like 'Haunted Locations of Delaware'. The haunting is unproven and unfired: it keeps showing up for work anyway.

Documented legend

WHYY identifies rooms 1, 6 and 11 as alleged activity locations. The hotel keeps the account on its own record — the sort of haunting a building earns one guest at a time. The story is documented as legend — recorded and retold, never verified as fact. 'Haunted Locations of Delaware' carries the account. The retelling is the record now — the legend metabolized the facts long ago.
