The record — long form
Ripley, on the Ohio River in Brown County, was one of the busiest crossing points on the Underground Railroad — the town of Reverend John Rankin's hilltop station and John Parker's ferry work, a place where antislavery was organized rather than incidental. Alexander Campbell — lawyer, Ohio state senator and leader of the town's abolitionist faction — kept his house on Front Street in the same service.
A senator's station
The house is documented on the National Park Service's Network to Freedom as a Ripley station — the record holding that fugitives were sheltered there while Campbell argued the cause in public office. The combination was typical of Ripley, where the network ran through the town's respectable institutions — its legislators, ministers and merchants — rather than around them.
Ripley's riverfront keeps the era's cluster of documented sites — Rankin's house on the hill above town, Campbell's on the street below, the water they both faced in between.
The house still stands in the riverfront historic district, a short walk from the water it faced. The file keeps it under its owner's name, which is how the best-documented stations tend to be filed — a person, an address, a choice on the record.
